Watchman, what ...
of the night?
by Dr. Hans C. Moolenburgh
ARTS, Holland
Glen Walker has
reached the respectable age of ninety. For the last
thirty years he has been the editor and main writer
of The Australian Fluoridation News, which
appears 6 times a year.
As an old fluoridation
opponent I am rather knowledgeable in the
anti-fluoridation literature and I can state that
The Australian Fluoridation News is the best
periodical on fluoridation on the planet. Of course,
there have been other journals and Newsletters of
considerable merit, but the A.F.N. not only gives a
wealth of facts, but also does something rare in
anti-fluoridation literature: it tries to unravel
the political, commercial, philosophical and
psychological aspects of that crazy aberration
called fluoridation. In short: A.F.N. is all-round.
What is the significance of
Glen Walker?
Just imagine one of
those high and mighty orthodox scientists or
comfortably placed politicians looking down their
noses at him and saying: "Who is he anyhow? Just a
small man writing in a small journal somewhere in
Australia. We need not bother about him!"
How to explain who
Glen is? Let me give a comparison.
In our bodies all
cells are extremely busy about their own business.
Three trillion of them are making us function. But
hidden in our tissues there are stem-cells. They,
contrary to the other cells, are not busy day and
night. They just wait and watch. Then, suddenly,
something happens: a trauma, an infection, a
degenerating cell and they get busy. Their main task
is to give information on how to cope with the
calamity and to produce new cells when other cells
have fallen in the battle.
A similar position
exists in the body of mankind. There, thinly
scattered throughout humanity, are people like human
stem-cells. Usually they are not important
politically, scientifically or financially speaking.
You seldom meet them, for there is one in a city,
two in a region and not many people know about them.
But then something goes wrong. The evil is usually
well hidden. Suddenly out of the blue there they
appear and get busy. Whistleblowers they are
sometimes called. They sound the alarm just at the
moment the evildoers thought themselves
invulnerable. They are like the kookaburra starting
the bird concert at dawn. Their enemies despise
them, they are slandered, ostracised and sometimes
killed. Their importance is acknowledged long after
they have passed away, but without them humanity
could not survive. Their influence is far more
lasting than that of the great names in our history
books.
When two or three of
them meet, they recognise each other straight away,
as if they are old friends. They form the invisible
network of guardians on the walls. Usually they are
quiet people, but when they act, their influence is
out of proportion with their importance in society,
for they know exactly where to hit hardest.
They are like the old
Jewish cobbler in this story: An American drives
with his land-rover through the Arabian desert and
suddenly the car stops. The engine is dead as a
doornail. He asks some local Arabs if they can help
him, but they only know about camels. But nearby
there is a Jewish shoemaker. This old man takes his
little hammer and looks at the engine. After looking
for some time, not doing anything, he bends over and
gives a slight tap. The engine sputters into life.
The American asks for
the bill and the shoemaker asks for $100. "One
hundred dollars for one tap?" the American explains.
Please give me a specified bill in writing." The
shoemaker writes:
|
Gave one tap |
$1 |
| To
know where to give the tap |
$99 |
|
Total |
$100 |
Those are the
whistleblowers.
Glen has understood
what the great struggle of our time is about. It is
about the right of small, seemingly unimportant
people, to lead their own lives. He does not
hesitate to challenge the powers that be, who seem
to consider common people as just cogs in the
political and commercial machine. Glen belongs to
those giving the people hope, that they are not
completely powerless after all, but that the deeds
of every person on earth, great or small, matter.
In essence, the
struggle of our times is that of Human values being
maintained in the face of inhuman forces. The
fluoridation fight is part of that struggle.
For once let it be
permitted for us to forget all the articles and to
focus on the writer himself and tell him that he is
doing a great job.
Dr. Hans
Moolenburgh, ARTS, is a Netherlands cancer
specialist with extensive knowledge of the effects
of fluorides, including heading a group of doctors
studying the effects of fluorides on the health of
the population in Holland. The studies showed that
patients were adversely affected by fluorides in
water. He lead in the successful campaign to prevent
artificial fluoridation of public water supplies
throughout Holland and the cessation of water
fluoridation in all towns that had previously been
artificially fluoridated, including Rotterdam. The
details of these successful efforts are documented
in his book "Fluoride: The Freedom Fight",
the story of fluoridation in Holland.
The above tribute
to The Australian Fluoridation News editor Glen S.R.
Walker, F.I.M.F., E.M.E.C.S., M.A.E.S., is a timely
reminder of the calibre of our editor. Dr.
Moolenburgh earnestly requested that the article be
published as a favour, long overdue, which would
personally give him great pleasure. This pleasure is
shared by me and no doubt many of our readers, who
periodically write in with letters of thanks. Glen
was reluctant for the article to be published,
writing "this is an embarrassment". On behalf of our
subscribers, readers and the general public, I am
sure that Dr. Moolenburgh's tribute echoes the
appreciation and pleasure of many of our subscribers
in recognition of Glen's outstanding work.
Readers are
fortunate that on retirement from his chemical
business with its NATA registered laboratory, (the
highest rating in Australia], Glen brought his
extensive knowledge and experience of the hazards
and dangers of fluoride chemicals to the editorship
of Australian Fluoridation News He is also the
author of the 450 page book "Fluoridation - Poison
on Tap", Chairman of the Freedom From Fluoridation
Federation of Australia and of the Anti-Fluoridation
Association of Victoria.
