The Scientific Foibles of
Fluoride Toothpaste
By Glen S.R.
Walker
Health
Department abrogate their responsibility to safeguard the
population's health
The Freedom from
Fluoridation Federation of Australia once again
repeats its status on Fluoride Toothpaste (FTP) as a
matter of necessity following the promotion and
endorsement of fluoride toothpaste by a visiting
U.S. speaker on fluoridation.
During the recent
fluoridation assault on Brisbane 2004-2005, the
visiting U.S. fluoridation speaker's large feature
article on fluoridation, published in the
Brisbane Courier, 17th November 2004 stated:
"Children are
already getting an optimum dose of fluoride in
beverages, processed foods and dental products so
they do not need any more."
In Australian
Chemistry Journal, February 2005 he also wrote:
"A more
sensible approach to deliver fluoride topically is
to use fluoridated toothpaste."
"Optimum" is a
dental propaganda term used by the fluoridation
promoters, especially dental professionals.
OPTIMUM - The Dictionary gives this clear
meaning of the word OPTIMUM:
(1) The
best or most favourable conditions for obtaining a
given result.
(2) The
greatest degree or best result obtained or
obtainable under specific conditions.
(3) Best
or most favourable.
That is the claim
of optimum fluoride dose.
Another statement
by an Australian academic published in the same
journal stated:
"Randomised
Controlled Trials (RCT) show that fluoride
toothpaste with 1000 ppm fluoride is effective
..."
The same academic
has also stated that "Fluoride in toothpaste can
kill" (The Australian, 29th August, 1985).
However, there
is no scientific proof of a controlled fluoride dose
per person because it differs enormously in every
person's way of life.
Neither is there
scientific proof of safety in the use of fluorides
under those conditions. There is no scientific
evidence that proves any fluoride is necessary in
the human diet. The safety factor per person is
therefore zero.
This Federation has
documented samples of scientific studies on FTP,
printed in The Australian Fluoridation News,
all of which clearly illustrates the dental fluoride
commercialism is contrary to necessary health action
in the individual, and the need for warning of the
lack of health safety. Yet the use of FTP is sadly
supported by a few who claim to be anti-fluoridationists.
This author
presented to senior overseas dental professionals
his original data from personal research studies on
the absorption of fluoride (F) from the use of
fluoride toothpaste. They advised that the data
could not be scientifically faulted in methodology,
scientific equipment, fluoride standards or results.
Panic
occurred in Australia with the explosion of dental
fluorosis
This study confirms
the reason why panic occurred in Australia with the
explosion of dental fluorosis, commonly called
"mottled teeth".
The maximum amount
of Government sponsored fluoride in FTP for children
was quietly reduced by over 90% because of its
toxicity attack on children's teeth. Fluoride
toothpaste also adds to the burden of toxic
fluorides in the body.
Until the advent of
plastic, aluminium was widely used for toothpaste
tubes. However, as stated by Colgate-Palmolive in
1964:-
"The active
fluoride in Colgate Fluoride Toothpaste reacts
with the aluminium and makes this form of
container unsuitable ... The collapsible lead tube
used for Colgate Fluoride Toothpaste is internally
coated with wax ..."
Three other leading
toothpaste manufacturers also advised that they used
special tubes for fluoride toothpaste.
This fluoride
reduction in FTP with its historical chronology was
published in The Australian Fluoridation News 1995,
and its reason confirmed in my study showing the
absorption into the body even when extreme caution
is exercised after cleaning teeth with fluoride
toothpaste and carefully swilling the mouth with
fluoride-free water.
The Government, the
N.H.M.R.C., the T.G.A., the A.D.A., and indeed the
fluoride toothpaste manufacturers all quietly moved
away whilst the 90% reduction adjustment of fluoride
in toothpaste for children's use was covertly
covered up, together with the dreadful commercial
sales pitch of adding enticing flavours that make
kids eat the stuff.
A 90% overdose
of fluoride for children and not a word about
accountability EXCEPT in The Australian Fluoridation
News!
Loose
Government Responsibility
The looseness in
Regulatory Responsible Government Organisations was
illustrated in 1998 when the National Drug and
Poisons Committee asked for submissions as to
whether Australia should follow all overseas
countries who are by law forcing fluoride toothpaste
manufacturers to inscribe on the package and tube
the following warning similar to the U.S.A. law.
"The U.S.
Food and Drug Administration requires fluoride
toothpaste to carry this health notice:
'Warning:
Keep out of reach of children under six years of
age.
If you
accidentally swallow more than used for
brushing, seek professional assistance or
contact a Poison Control Centre immediately'."
Our submission was
dismissed by the National Drug and Poison Committee
stating that fluoride toothpaste manufacturers can
handle this matter themselves!!!!
Consider the
scientific standards of Australia's senior Health
Organisations.
Fluoride
toothpaste was registered as a S5 poison
The N.H.M.R.C. in
their book "The Effectiveness of Water Fluoridation"
p.131., explained the need to examine poison
regulations concerning fluoride toothpaste which was
registered as an ' S5 POISON' as printed on the
package.
The Answer by
N.H.M.R.C.
Fluoride Toothpaste
an S5 poison was reclassified as "Cosmetic for
sales regulations".
Here we have the
Australian Government's professional and honest
sorcery of changing an S5 POISON into a safe benign
product by altering its scientific health category
into a cosmetic by reclassification!
S5 Poison
labels on fluoride toothpaste removed to help
commercial sales.
All S5 POISON
LABELS on fluoride toothpaste were removed, not for
your health reason, no, it was to help commercial
SALES that superceded the health and rightful
Government protection of Australian people.
Toothpaste
Manufacturers Break Law
In 1988 the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration told six toothpaste and
mouthwash makers they were breaking the law by
saying their products can prevent plaque or gum
disease, and should either stop making the claims or
back them up with evidence.
The paper reported
that "In its letters the FDA pointed out that the
companies had not submitted evidence to the agency
(FDA) proving toothpaste or mouthwash was either
safe or effective for dealing with these early
disease conditions."
"We are not
aware of any evidence establishing that the
product (toothpaste) is generally recognised as
safe and effective for gingivitis."
The letters were
sent by Rudolf Apodoca, director of the division of
labelling compliance at F.D.A.
It appears the
safety of fluoride toothpaste was not proven in 1988
and our research indicates proof is still missing.
The Government
gives fluoride toothpaste manufacturers an open
sesame, divorced from Australian Law which states
fluoride toothpaste must not contain more than 1000
ppm fluoride. (The Effectiveness of Water
Fluoridation in the book by N.H.M.R.C. quotes
Australian Standards Association of Australia -
Standard toothpaste 2827, 1000 ppm.) But Colgates
now sell Neutra Fluor 5000 Plus, a toothpaste with
5000 ppm fluoride and the Government is silent as in
most every case when that dreadful F word fluoride
is mentioned.
A 56 gram tube of
Colgate Neutra Fluor 5000 plus, with 1.1% sodium
fluoride (to give the 5000 ppm fluoride ion contains
0.6 grams of sodium fluoride, a very toxic dose.
Fatalities from the
use of fluorides have occurred with children, such
as that of 3 year old William Kennedy, who died from
a lethal fluoride dose administered in a dental
chair, resulting in $750,000 compensation awarded in
a State Supreme Court, reported in the New York
Times, 20th January 1979.
In the U.K., The
Sunday Telegraph of 24th November 1996 gave a front
page report on a payment by Colgate for teeth ruined
by fluoride.
The paper reported
Colgate-Palmolive made a "goodwill" payment of £1000
to a child "whose teeth appeared to have been
damaged by fluoride".
Sharon and Trevor
Isaacs of Highams Park, Essex, were paid £1000 by
Colgate after their ten-year-old son Kevin was
diagnosed as suffering from dental fluorosis, where
the tooth's enamel was mottled by fluoride.
Lawyers acting for
the Isaacs said that the settlement was a
break-through and would trigger a flood of
compensation claims. More than 200 parents are
already attempting to claim similar damages from
toothpaste manufacturers.
The mother of the
child with mottled teeth said her family did not
have fluoridated water and had never used fluoride
tablets. "I always used Colgates Minty Gel, and a
pea-sized amount as recommended. Kevin didn't eat
sweets and I used to make sure he brushed his teeth
twice a day. He used to swallow the toothpaste, I
rang Colgate but they said it would be alright."
Mrs Isaacs said
Kevin was teased at school over his "rotten teeth".
A letter from
Colgate-Palmolive shows the Company believe the cost
of coating Kevin's teeth when he reached seventeen
would be £1000. (See The Australian Fluoridation
News, Vol. 33, No. 1,Jan.-Feb. 1997.) The N.H.M.R.C.
stated that:
"Toothpaste
containing fluoride would appear to have the least
physical barriers to misuse, but reportedly the
contents (fillers, emulsifiers, etc) induce
vomiting if large amounts are ingested."
So you see, it
makes you sick, but they (N.H.M.R.C.) suggest it has
an automatic protection and you just vomit the
poison fluoride, because "it is reportedly" that
happens - a strange utterance of scientific meaning!
A famous fluoride
toothpaste study by Kock et al, Swedish Dental
Journal 1982, is used world-wide to show "scientific
proof of effectiveness of fluoride toothpaste!
The study only used
fluoride toothpaste with 240 and 1000 ppm F, but
added (page 237) that:
"For ethical
reasons it was not possible to include a true
control group i.e. children who were using a
dentifrice without fluoride in the study."
Since when was it
ethical to hide a control unit (children using
non-fluoride toothpaste) in a scientific study and
proceed without such a necessary and demanding part
of the research equation.
Fluoride
Toothpaste Dangers
Dentists do not
like truthful data that warns of fluoride dangers
and react accordingly.
June 30, 1997
An email to Dental
Public Health list - Fluoride a poison - F.D.A.?
"The Sunday
Age (Melbourne) carried an item on 29 June to the
effect that the U.S. FDA had advised young
children that 'if you accidentally swallow more
(toothpaste) than used for brushing, seek
professional help or contact a poison information
centre'. The newspaper pointed out that it is the
first time the word "poison" has been used on
toothpaste packaging in the US."
"The newspaper
quotes Australian Dental Association leaders as
saying that the statement is an over-reaction. The
various anti-fluoride persons in Australia are
taking an 'I told you so' position. Mr. Glen
Walker, a retired industrial chemist and president
of the Victorian Anti-Fluoridation Association, is
quoted as saying that the U.S. ruling was a strong
disendorsement of fluoride and it supported
claims that fluoride was dangerous to humans."
"Is it really
the case that the FDA has made such a statement!"
(Signed) "A
Professor of Dentistry"
We can understand
the Professor questioning the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration statement that is now printed on
fluoride toothpaste containers throughout the world
EXCEPT Australia.
Such fluoride
warnings must not be used in Australia, it would
spoil sales of a good commercial product if using
words like POISON!
Fluorine - A
Protoplasmic Poison
'PROOF THAT
THE AMERICAN DENTAL ASSOCIATION HAS KNOWN ABOUT
THE DANGERS OF FLUORIDE SINCE 1936. TODAY'S
SCIENCE TELLS THE SAME STORY - but with additional
adverse health effects. Ingestion of fluoride
today is far greater than it was in 1936.
"Fluorine is a
general protoplasmic poison, but the most
important symptoms of chronic fluorine poisoning
known at present are mottling of the teeth and
interference with bone formation. It is virtually
impossible to avoid a small fluorine intake, just
as it is virtually impossible to avoid a small
lead intake, but when the threshold value is
exceeded, as it is in drinking water containing
one or more parts of fluorine per 1,000,000,
detectable signs of toxicity appear." Journal of
the American Dental Association, Vol. XXIII, p574,
1936.
Note the opening
few words describing Fluorine, usually printed as
fluoride, and its description in the Journal of
the American Dental Association way back in 1936.
Warning printed in
the Melbourne Age, 17th November, 1992:
"The intake of
fluoride, other than in water, should be strictly
controlled in children to prevent permanent
discolouration of teeth, according to a new policy
of the National Health and Medical Research
Council.
The policy
recommends that strategies, and possibly
legislation, be developed to prevent young
children taking excessive fluoride through
toothpaste, infant formulas and fluoride tablets."
Even the
National Health and Medical Research Council admit
the health dangers of fluoride toothpaste. In
their book, "The Effectiveness of Water
Fluoridation", they state on page 135:
"The one
empirically demonstrated problem is in relation to
increased risk of dental fluorosis in those young
children with a high total Ingestion of fluoride."
"Thus there is
need for control of fluoride exposure from these
sources - particularly toothpaste and infant
formula in order to avoid excessive exposure in a
minority of children."
Admitting the
fluoride poisoning of children from the use of
fluoride toothpaste but unable to document a
scientific meaning of "high total dose of fluoride",
and a scientific explanation of "minority of
children".
How can toothpaste
be safe for children or adults when Australia's
senior Health Organisation, the N.H.M.R.C. state:
"Avoidance of
excessive individual exposure among young children
is best approached by controlling the intake of
discretionary fluoride."
What does this all
mean - simply that children are being POISONED with
fluoride in fluoride toothpaste!
These are only a
few of the reasons why the Australian Freedom From
Fluoridation Federation cannot agree with those
suggesting the use of fluoride toothpaste for
children and adults.
The Sunday
Telegraph 14th January, 1996 published an article
about research into fluoridated toothpaste and its
harm to children's teeth.
The article quotes
the University of Connecticut Health Centre research
into 916 children up to 8 years of age.
About 70 per cent
of the children using fluoridated toothpaste
developed dental fluorosis (tooth mottling). About
25 per cent of fluorosis cases were caused by
inappropriate dentists' prescriptions of fluoride
supplements.
That U.S. research
confirms our own research as documented in the
Australian Fluoridation News, Nov/Dec 1995.
A Poison in Small Print
is Still a Poison
Don't be fooled
by small print on toothpaste packages.
The majority of
toothpaste manufacturers now list the toxic fluoride
additives such as sodium fluoride, stannous fluoride
and sodium monofluorophosphate in very small print
on toothpaste packets, together with other
toothpaste ingredients.
The proportion of
fluoride compounds usually used is from 2,200 to
7,600 parts per million (0.22% to 0.76%) of the
fluoride compound. Colgate Neutra Fluor 5000
contains an extreme 11,000 ppm of sodium fluoride, a
known rat poison.
Be aware that toxic
fluorides in small type are just as poisonous as
when shown in large print!
The majority of
shoppers do not carefully look at tiny print on the
toothpaste packages they purchase from standard
supermarket shelves and therefore may not be aware
that it is toxic and harmful fluoride toothpaste
which they are buying, thanks to the NHMRC winding
back the S5 POISON labelling law.
Shoppers are not
given the alternative of purchasing fluoride-free
toothpaste from standard toiletry areas, but must
seek out the health products section of supermarkets
to obtain a safe, fluoride-free toothpaste; or
purchase toothpaste from health shops.
