Fluoridation fraud 'on the cards'?
BDA should practice what it preaches

Letter sent to the editor, Express-News, San Antonio.

BEGINS:

Fluoridation fraud 'on the cards'?

I recently read with interest that San Antonio was fluoridated at the beginning of the month. I have also learned today (the 15th August) that the 'Crest Healthy Smiles 2010' bandwagon is about to roll into town (PR Newswire, 15th August 2002).

It is not uncommon for new water fluoridation schemes to be bolstered by additional measures to improve children's health. But what credit will the 'Crest' campaign be given when, in several years time, the pro-fluoridation dentists start boasting that water fluoridation alone has (allegedly) reduced tooth decay.

The simple truth is that the efficacy of fluoridation schemes is unproven because there is no credible science to show that they work. And in numerous examples I have learned of either, or both, extra dental health professionals / money, being used to improve kid's teeth when fluoridation is commenced.

All of the new benefits achieved by providing additional care to children in San Antonio will eventually distort the statistics on dental health. I only hope that enough San Antonians will remember this when the claims of the benefits of water fluoridation are dishonestly proposed by the pro-fluoridation lobby in several years time.

Yours sincerely

Chris Holdcroft, www.fluoride.org.uk.
